May Arts Ribbon Organization Blog Hop & Giveaway

Welcome to the second day of the May Arts Organization blog hop!  The Ribbonistas are sharing ways to store all of that gorgeous ribbon that we love.  I have to tell you, this hop kind of sent me into panic mode, because I was afraid if I shared pictures of my studio, a camerman might show up from Hoarders, and want to shoot an episode!  But, luckily, I've been motivated to work on some storage solutions -  and I can tell you, I will be stalking the rest of the team's blogs to see what great ideas they came up with!  Also, be sure to leave plenty of comments along the way, for a chance to win 3 spools of your choice of May Arts ribbon.

I like to organize my ribbons by color (mostly) - because, I am generally looking for a specific color to go with a project.  My exception for this is my silk ribbon.  I keep it all grouped together, because I will generally work with it together.

I have CD storage boxes arranged on a wooden book shelf that the shelved are sloped towards the middle (like a V).  I can see into the boxes of ribbon while they are on the shelf.  My silk ribbon is just in it's own little box.
For shorter lengths of ribbon, not on the spool, I use a large safety pin, and group similar types of ribbon together, and hang this from my baker's rack, that is right beside my ribbon shelf.  This seems to work better for me than having them all stuffed in a big box (which is how it was before the idea of this hop!)

Here is the rest of the hop line-up.  I hope you will be inspired to organize your ribbon stash.

I have my ribbons in little boxes stacked inside tubs but sadly it doesn't take me long to get them in a real mess in need of urgent sorting!!!

  7. I organize by color, too. And I have individual lengths organized by color, stored in ziploc bags placed in a basket by my desk. That way, I actually use them!

  8. Using the large safety pins is a good idea for the lace ribbons. I don't know why I never thought about putting colors together when I'm storing my ribbons. Going to go do that now.

  9. I pretty much have mine in boxes too. Like the safety pin idea. I also store in zip lock bags to keep clean if they don't have a spool anymore. My poor cat has long hair and sheds everywhere.. so I got to keep the hair and dust out!

  11. I love your slanted shelves Gini! What a great idea! Also the safety pin - I have loads of ribbon off of the reel and am always hunting for ways to store it where I can still see what I have! Thanks for sharing :) By the way, I KNOW Hoarders would show up at my house if they could see my craft room...

  19. Oh Gini! I know what you mean about the Hoarders comment ;) I do like how you store the shorter lengths. Visible is good for me so that I remember what I have and can use it!

  21. Great idea for the loose ribbon! Don't feel intimidated. We are all different and what works well for one may not work for the next person. We can't all be Super organized-I know I am not and that's ok :)

  23. Mine are in shoeboxes which works for me right now since I don't have a lot on spools. Will definitely break out some safety pins - quick and easy, I like that!

  39. The giant safety pin idea is great! Just pick it up & take it to your work area & not lose those small pieces which are usually plenty for one or two cards or for just that little touch of 'extra'.
