I decided to make a small canvas and incorporate loads of texture and bright cheerful colors.  I added  some May Arts gold mesh to the base of my canvas and used gelatos to add bright colors.  I stenciled over that using the Whipped Spackle.  My flowers were stamped and watercolored using the Big Brush pens.

Mixed Media Faux Metal Heart Video Tutorial

I recently saw some vintage folk art hearts, made from hammered tin, and decided to challenge myself and see if I could make something that looked similar from paper.  So here are my results, and if you would like to see how I created this,  please watch my video.

Valentine's Day is the perfect time of the year to create nostalgic projects to give to your loved ones. Tussy Mussies became popular during the Victorian period, but I've updated this idea, using the new, trendy Kraft Polka Dot Pops paper.

 Valentine Tussy Mussy Supplies:

• Kraft Polka Dot Pops Paper
• Kraft Core Shattered Collection
• Sand-It Gadget
• Darice Valentine Heart Embossing Folder
• May Arts Ribbon 466-38-17
• Crepe Paper
• Scor-Tape
• Tulle

 
Step 1. Cut a half circle to form the cone. Mark the center on the backside, to assist in forming the cone.

 
 Step 2. Use Scor-tape to attach the sides.

 
Step 3. Punch a hole on each side of the cone and use to add a ribbon holder.  
Step 4. Take about 4 yards of crepe paper, sew through the center to pleat, and add to the cone with Scor-tape.
 Step 5. Embellish the crepe ruffle with satin ribbon.  
Step 6. Emboss the Valentine heart with the folder. Sand the raised edges.

   
Step 7. Cut the heart out and attach to the cone.

 
Step 8. Fill with tulle and other goodies of your choice.

 This is an easy project to put together, and one that can be changed for any season or holiday. Thanks for stopping by! ~Gini

Play Day in the Studio

At the end of the week, I need time in my studio to unwind and create.  So today, I did just that.  I made this mixed media piece on a wood panel and really just had fun. I sprayed the background, then stamped/heat embossed the next layer, and added stenciled modeling paste with embossing powder sprinkled on it while still wet.  The snowflakes were rub-ons, and worked great over the modeling paste (I wasn't sure if it would work or not, so it was a happy success!).  I also thought it would be fun for a frosty canvas to add "frozen" droplets of water.

So after playing for a bit today, I feel refreshed and ready for the week ahead!

The Holiday Spirit 

I wanted to create a canvas to celebrate the New Year and somehow a frosty landscape celebrates a clean slate, a type of starting anew.

  I love incorporating old book pages into my art.  I was thrilled this fall to find a couple of old English and French dictionaries at a library book sale.

  I mounted the page onto cardstock for strength, and then used an embossing folder to create the flower pattern.  I added chipboard to the area that I was going to stamp prior to embossing, to leave a flat area.

The leaves and moth were stamped onto vellum, another fun and fragile paper.

Super Bowl Party Invitation

All right football fans, the most anticipated sports/social event of the year is quickly approaching, and it's time to start party planning. This cute invitation will catch the eye of everyone on your guest list.
 
Super Bowl Party Invitation Supplies:

• Core Essentials Cardstock Darks
• Vellum Transparent Paper
• Sand-It Gadget
• Cuttlebug Mesh Texture Embossing Folder
• Scor-Pal Scoring Board
• Xyron Adhesive
• Crop-a-Dile Hole Punch
• Twine

 Step 1. Cut paper for card base 6" x 12". Score at 3" and 9".
 Step 2. Cut a piece of green cardstock 5 1/2" square. Score every half inch. Sand the score lines with the Sand-It Gadget.

 Step 3. Cut the square in half. Fold the card base as a gatefold card, and glue the green paper to each side.  
Step 4. Cut a football shape from paper. Line the football up over the opening of the card. Mark holes to punch through the football and card base. Use a hole punch to make the holes larger.


 Step 5. Emboss the football with folder. Sand the raised areas. Line the holes up and glue to one side of the card.
 Step 6. Print the details for your invitation on vellum, using the computer. Glue to the inside of
the card.

 
 Step 7. Loosely lace the football to close the card. After all of the holes are laced, then tighten them.

Mixed Media Angel

Things are finally calming down from the holidays, and then the whirlwind of creating projects for CHA - so, I have a moment to share a canvas that I finished.  There are so many layers on this (the figure actually has a layer of cheesecloth underneath). The flower was stamped onto old dictionary paper and embossed, then cut out and applied to the canvas.  The finished piece is 12 x 12 on wood.

Winter Wonderland Lantern

The holidays may be over, but we still have a few more months of wintery weather. Bring a little light into the season, with this shimmery tea-light lantern. Add a battery powered tea light, and the vellum paper allows a beautiful glow.


 

 Winter Wonderland Lantern Supplies:

• Glitter Silk Cardstock
• Vellum
• Pop Dot Paper
• Adhesive Glitter Paper
• Sizzix Bigz Die - 3D Luminary
• Heartfelt Creations Banner and Trees Die (Snowflake)

Step 1. Die cut 2 sets of the Luminary die.

 Step 2. Score the cuts as marked on the cuts.

 Step 3. Add vellum to the backside of the windows with double-sided tape.  

Step 4. Assemble the lantern with double-sided tape.

 

Step 6. Die cut snowflakes and glue to the center of the vellum window.

 

Step 7. Embellish the lantern with Shaved Ice, snow border punch, ribbon and floral stems.

 

So instead of heading out into the winter weather, stay inside where it's warm and create your own winter wonderland!   ~Gini
